Kiteboarding in Vava’u? What is kiteboarding you may ask? Kiteboarding is a sport. It is a mixture of wakeboarding but without a boat. Kiteboarders use exactly that - kites and a board. They use the power of the wind to generate the power they need to surf the waves. Obviously the best spots to stage a kiteboarding competition is that it has to have to have wind and enough wind to consistently blow for the duration of the tournament. Without wind you have no competition.
So from the top kiteboarding locations in the world from Cape Town (South Africa), to the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa to the Mediterranean, to Cumbuco (Brasil) and now Vava’u. Vava’u it seems is the latest ideal venue to be chosen as the prime location for an amateur women’s kiteboarding event. Women kiteboarders from all over the globe gravitated to our hidden paradise to partake in the kiteboarding championships. The event was held between Oct 13-19 just off the beautiful Mounu Island.
This kiteboarding event in Vava’u can only raise the profile of Vava’u and Tonga as a whole internationally. Let’s hope there are more….it’s not a bad business to get into with hiring the equipment out and teaching people to kiteboard
