Yesterday morning, Friday 11th January 2008, Sir Edmund Hillary, arguably the 20th Century’s greatest explorer and adventurer passed away. Before man first stepped on the moon, Sir Edmund Hillary and his close friend Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first people to scale to the summit of Mt Everest in 1953. Over the many years, Sir Edmund Hillary has built schools, hospitals, clinics, airfields and many more projects to benefit the Sherpas of Nepal. Sir Edmund Hillary’s humanitarian efforts and works will be remembered as much if not more than his conquest of Mt Everest.
The New Zealand Government is planning a State Funeral for Sir Edmund Hillary and planning is underway this weekend for this incredible man. In Tonga, people are welcome to sign a condolence book located at the New Zealand High Commission.
