Tongan weddings for tourists

One of the growing tourist attractions in the Cook Islands are weddings. People fly there from all over the world to get married. The guests are entertained, the couples have a choice of venues to get married (ie. on a church, a beach or on a tropical island) and all their needs are met for marital bliss. The Cook Islands cater to different budgets from a party of two to a village sized wedding with advanced warning. The issue with the Cook Islands is that Rarotonga and Aitutaki are small islands with limited facilities so bookings are essential.
Weddings in the South Pacific is an opportunity for any Tongan to take advantage of. There is no reason why Tongatapu, Ha’apai, Vava’u, the Niua’s or ‘Eua can’t be used as backdrops for couples to get married. The key is to create a genuine Tongan experience not a palangi one unless of course the clients choose that option. Weddings are a lot of work but the rewards are worth it for Tonga as a whole. There may be issues with Government legislation with regards to weddings, however, those are hurdles that can be overcome with some foresight and support. If we create more reasons for tourists to come to Tonga, people will come…and that’s not to mention our own people returning home to get married.
